drove one several times in the military. can't remember the nomenclature or what nickname we had for it.

Looks like it was purpose built as an off road forklift.
 
Most of them, at least back in the day were converted tractors.
 
The one I had when I ran Shandon Iron & Steel started life as an International I4 which was the industrial version of the Farmall H.
