So I picked up this jacobsen chief a couple months ago and it was odd ever since I got it, nothing made any sense, I ran the numbers on both the motor and the front grill it came out as a 1970 for both, I know it's a 1970 because it has the hole in the hood and a electric pto it has the 12hp kohler so I thought it was a chief 1200 but no they didn't make a gear drive chief 1200 in 1970, they quit making it in 1968, would this tractor be the chief 12??, I can't find any info on the chief 12 I think it is a rare find, it has all the original decals on it but they are different, I can't figure out how to post pictures or else I would

Sadly I did take this tractor all apart due to owning 2 other jacobsen chiefs, I had a 1000 gear drive given to me and I just picked up a 1200 hydro the 1000 had a badly noisy gearbox so I swapped them

It may turn out that you will be looking for parts to put this one back together.

that makes it a 1970 you are correct. But they did make the 1200 up to 1971 according to my Jacobsen dealer parts manual.

This tractor is actually in a pretty bad shape worse than my other two, it looks like the previous owner was modifying their own way so a lot of hacking and welding done to it, the reason I bought it was because the 12hp kohler in it is by far the best running engine I have ever seen and the rear end was quiet and smooth other than that, lots of rust, and jacobsen quit making the 1200 gear drive in 68, they stuck to only 1200 hydro after that which has me puzzled about why I have a 12hp gear drive from 1970
