Working on a project and trying to come up with a diesel motor for it in the 25hp range. Wondering if there were any ideas out there of what a good motor might be.

Might look into one from a semi trailer cooling unit.  don't know for sure what hp they are but a friend put one on a GT and it has tons of power.  Had to have the adapter custom built.

Take a look for used reefer engines.. Lots of refrigerated trailers get wrecked annually and if you can source it from wrecker price could be decent depending on location.

Kubota D1105 if you have room is bullet proof..long as you NEVER use starter fluid on it.

The Kubota D1005 is also a good choice.

I work at a truck salvage yard. I see these reefer engines every so often. I can inquire about one if you're interested.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I just saw this post, would you be willing to inquire about one for me possibly? I have always been searching for a small diesel and just have not found one yet. I don't think I am that far away from where you are.

We need to know about this project to suggest a proper engine. Torquewise, a diesel only needs to be about half the HP of a gasser to compare, also the reefer unit motors most often have permanently set governors, around 2200 RMP.

I wonder if the lower rpm would adversely affect the operation of a mower deck? Mower decks seem to work better at higher rpms.

Change pulleys around so you get mower speed back up!

Why the lower RPM's? Most if not all of the smaller modern diesels that I run are rated for 3600 rpm. I don't run them that fast except for the one in the golf cart but they are rated for it.
