I guess I will give that a try.  The current PS in it is an Antec NeoEco 380w that is has had little use.  I have nothing to loose.  I am ready to try Win7 on another tower I have and be done with this.

This is the first time I've looked at this thread.

The symptoms you have been describing are pretty much classic for a weak/failing Power Supply Unit.

I thought about this some time ago too...

I've never been a fan or the Antec PSUs.  They have a pretty spottry record as far as which ones are decent and which ones are junk.

I've used CORAIR PSUs for all of my builds for myself and frends evere since Corsair started marketing them.  They have a very good reputation for making high quality PSUs even in their low end models.

The PSU is the last place you want to try to save $$ on, as a poor PWU can, and will, take out the vid card, memory and mother board if they fail catastrophically.

Heading to bed but wanted to give another update.  Grabbed the extra machine from the garage and tried to install w7 on it - same problems at the same point in the install (and this machine has been running w10 since JulY).  More as I fight this one as time allows.

So I consulted two different friends in the IT world for advice. The first one said install the updates one at a time until you find the offender and skip it. The other suggested a similar process with some subtle variations.

Here is the update that keeps failing on both machines.  It is a required update and will not download any others if not installed.  This is the one that keeps failing...

The cynic in me thinks this is a ploy to force people to upgrade to Win10...

I realize that there aren't to many win7 installs going on but has there been any other reports of this problem?

I would not be surprised considering how sneaky they have been and given their history.  I have to work on the wife's computer today. She said she can't reply to email last night.  Dreading having to deal with Windows. :wallbanging: :mad2: :smashing_pc:

I am downloading 10 on a USB drive and going to stick it the machine and give it to the owner.  If he does not like it I will stick Linux Mint on it for it.

I am done with this...  i have already spent enough time and effort on this to do any more research.  I might screw with the other towner and see if I can get it to install but that will be done when I feel up to it.

You've worked on it a lot longer then I would have done.

I am told that I have the tendency to be prescient when it comes to some things... either that or I am OCD.  :deadhorse:

Irony of the day is this: I activated Win7 then started to create the W10 usb drive.  I happened to click on the notification pane on the bottom right side only to see Windows downloading updated.  Check and there are 222 critical updates and 6 optional updates downloaded and ready to install.   :wallbanging:  :wallbanging:  :wallbanging:  :wallbanging:  :wallbanging:  :wallbanging:

For clarification - this is the 2nd tower - Dell Studio - that finally updated.  120 of the 222 updates have installed in the past hour.   :hitting_self_roller:

221 of the 222 installed over night and another 50-some (MS Office installed) installing at this time.  This number does not include optional updates that I am waiting to install.

That's one of the things that is a big head ache dealing with a windows install.  I usually takes a couple of hours to get windows installed then a few days to get the updates installed and now you have to watch to make sure their spy ware doesn't get installed.  I can have just about any distro installed with all the updates within an hour maybe and hour and half. I also have the command line to use on Debian distro's for updates in case of and issue that will give me a verbose read out.

Do you have a list of all the updates that should not be installed?

I have them somewhere (I know they are here on the forum) and will uninstall/hide them.  I also installed a 2nd drive and now have windoze doing an auto-backup weekly for the owner.

So the Dell Studio that I finally got updated is at the new home and seems to be working fine.

As for the HP box that started this thread, It is now running Mint 17 in the garage and works great.

As for my feelings about MS, I need to enroll in anger management classes after this experience.  :mad2:
