638 is the last #s of the serial # , the tractor is a 656

The 638 in the serial number has no relevence to the horsepower or deck size. That's a nice find and a great price. You could bolt a Kohler 161 or 181 right to the frame. That plate wouldn't be used.

To answer your original question,
It's a 1966
It originally had a 6 horse engine (possibly Tecumseh?) if it was a Teccy, it will be harder to locate one. They had a shorter lifespan than the 8 and up hp engines.
I agree that your best repower if you can't find an original would be a nice little Kohler.

Well I found a 3 1/2 hp Tecumseh real cheap that runs , it looks like what should be in there so I am going to get it just so it will have a motor in it and be able to drive it around , and I will keep looking for a motor to put in it , I think the Kohler route might be the way to go if I can find a nice 7 or 8 horse

Went to work on the 656 today but wanted to build this first , I really do want to have to bend over all the time to work on my tractors , just need to get a piece of expanded metal for the bottom to be able to stack parts on as they come off the tractor , and its on casters so when I need to move it to get other things in the shop it can just be rolled to the corner2015 tractor stand002.jpg 2015 tractor stand003.jpg
