Dad lost our farm checkbook yesterday & believes it was at a certain eatery. He went back, but no checkbook. Had 4 checks left in it. Called our bank 1st thing this morning to put stop on those checks. Then a bank in a small town down the road called with a suspicious check for $500. The guy claimed "I" bought a pair of shotguns from him in the eatery parking lot. Had my name forged on the check, and only other thing written was the numeric $500 and this fellow's name as recipient. The bank people know this guy & said he could never have made the neater signature himself, but he did sign his name himself as recipient. They could not do anything at the bank except turn him away & hold the check, but did copy his drivers license. I have that & will be taking it to our County Attorney in the morning. Oh what fun!

At least you caught it in time,Dan. Also when people do this they can be real stinkers and do other things but I hope not. Good luck.

The bank people said this guy isn't bright enough to pull anything more than simple forgery. They said he's several fries from a full Happy Meal, and not in a threatening way....just barely capable of taking care of himself. But he knows right from wrong, and is gonna have to cough up some answers. He told the bank folks some weird story, so lets see what he tells the police when they find him. Bet the story keeps changing!

Hope the guilty party get what's coming to them.
Had an acquaintance this happened to, when the first check showed up, it wasn't that person who had forged it... Had been written by someone else for stuff at a yard sale. Dunno if they ever found the guy or not, but the poor guy from the yard sale was out the money and his stuff. Drivers license or no checks, moral of the story.

I think this guy had someone else sign the check for him. He didn't get upset at all at the bank, when he supposedly was out 2 nice shotguns. If it were me that got screwed out of 2 shotguns, you can bet I'd get upset! He also told the people at the bank that at the same restaurant he was followed into the bathroom & robbed at gunpoint a short while back. THAT would have made the local paper for sure & never did. I'd bet money this guy is dirty.

Hope everything settles out OK on that one Dan, Better a check book than a credit or debit card though I think.

I am glad the bank was alert enough to stop the check from going through and got the guy and also glad he wasn't the brightest criminal or you could have had a lot more trouble to contend with. I hope your forger will get what he has coming to him.

That is a bummer and could have been much worse, glad the bank was smart enough not to cash the check. Hopefully he gets his reward pronto.

As if farming wasn't hard enough as it is, then someone else thinks they need the proceeds of said enterprise worse than you!

I hope all works out for you, Dan. Sounds like you're on the right track.

We just have one of 4 checks. The other 3 & the checkbook are likely tossed at this point. I doubt he'll risk having it found in his possession. This check was the 2nd one, so may be another got used, maybe more. We'll just have to wait & see.
