I have a JD 316 with an Onan engine.  Tractor Model is Moo316X011224. Engine model is P218C T/10462C.

Engine serial # C903669024.. It just stopped when mowing the grass . I found it had no spark to the plugs. I checked the voltage at the coil and had 10.5 when cranking. I checked the coil resistance and had 3.2 ohms on the primary and 18,000 ohms between the plug wire sockets in the coil. I don't know where to go from here as this is the first Onan I have worked on. Information on the Web seems hard to find. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in ad

Do a search for "Troubleshooting Onan Ignition", there's good info  and pics on how to check the coil and trigger function.

Welcome to the forum.

Hope folks have good suggestions for you.

Make sure the points are still closing making a good connection.

My Case with a Kohler 14hp shut down while cutting grass one day.  One of the leads to the coil was broken.

It had failed inside a connector so it wasn't easy to see right away.

You can download the service manual here. http://gardentractor...service-manual/

See section 8 for ignition troubleshooting/testing. P218 will have electronic ignition, no points.
