hey guys i have a few questions im new to this whole garden tractor thing but i grew up with my grandfather owning a early 70s jd that he bought new. well now i just bought my first jd its a 316 with i believe a single cylinder kohler i would love all the tips and trick you folks could help me with.

first thing from the research ive seen this model 316 was a little different form the later 316s can anyone explain (other than the motor) what the differences were and will the attachments interchange?

thanks for all your help

That's a new one on me. I thought all 316's were Onan BF powered. Learn something every day.

The early kohler powered 316 was a closed frame just like the 140,300,312,and 314 and all use the same attachments. The late style 316 with the onan was a open frame tractor and is the little brother to the 318.The attachments for the late 316 with the open frame will not work on that tractor.

The 300,314 and 317 attachments will work. I think that is all. Was there a 312? Bhts beat me to it...but he missed the 317.

The 316 with the Kohler was made only one year, 1978. It's actually a 300, which was made from 1975 to 1977, but Deere decided to rebadged the 300 to the 316 to fit with the rest of the JD model theme, as they had the 208, 210, 212, 214 in that series. As mentioned it was a closed frame design, which meant there was a hitch plate on the rear, whereas the open frame design of the 318 and Onan powered 316 had the transmission exposed in the rear.

The 316 is a great tractor, capable of many things from pulling a plow, pushing snow, blowing snow, etc. And that is a fantastic price.

Yes, it has dual hydraulics, same as the 300 and the 317 that replaced the 316.

Glad you got a good deal and the answers you were looking for. From what our JD members are saying above, you got a very capable machine. When you can, I'm sure everyone would like to see your pride and joy.
