I am trying to help a friend with this old ATM 600 with a no spark issue. The ignition system is a capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) the engine is a Kawasaki KF82D-X. The engine has an exciter coil and a pulser coil mounted under the flywheel. The exciter pack(CDI) is located under blower shroud cover. Parts are hard to come by and expensive. Has anyone changed these ignition systems over to a coil using a magnetic pickup. This engine was also used in club car golf carts. Any help please thanks

I know someone who did a conversion like that on a Club Car.  I remember he was pretty ticked with it after the fact since it never really ran quite right.  I don't think the timing was right.

Have you determined what exactly is wrong?  The CDI is usually what I am used to seeing fail on that type of set up.  If you pull any of the parts let me know what numbers are on it.  It is probably a fairly common Japanese ignition system, and you can probably get it elsewhere for about 30% of what Deere is asking.

Thanks Ben

Today I am going to check resistance on the pulser coil and the exciter coil. If resistance is ok then the CDI module is bad. The Kawasaki part number for the CDI is 316670-8465C

Sounds like the same setup as my SSI module on the Tecumsehs.

Check out the link in my sig for SSI conversion. I use a small pickup I got from Midwest Super cubs and a magnet glued in the flywheel and it fires a coil. Works pretty well, but motor is always at advance so it will backfire if idled down too quick.

223.00 isn't terrible if that fixes the problem.  The first one last for nearly 3 decades.

Thanks  all. This Kawasaki engine has a pulse coil and charge coil under flywheel. Could the pulse coil be used for an external coil setup?

update got the old Gator going again. After much searching found a CDI module under Club Car listing part # 1012520. After cleaning carb it started and runs great. It was a good learning experience on how the cdi ignition system works.  The Kawasaki KF82D-X engine seems to be strong after 28 years

I had a friend with a slightly later 5 wheeler with 2 seats and steering wheel. Those aren't actually Gators, but we all call them that.
