If the flywheel key isn't sheared, Check gap on the points. If they are just at the threshold of opening, they may be firing early (before the valve gets closed). Next I'd check for signs the engine has been opened up. It IS possible to get the cam out of alignment. Intake staying open at or after "10 before TDC" would be a big sign.
You may want to get the actual model # off the engine tins & see what you can find out about it.
