Have had a 1040 setting on my tractor lift a long time. Finally tore it down to every part as usually do. Lots of blue flame wrench needed on that one! This kind has a peerless? rear-end like common GT's use instead of odd Speedex drive. Floor pans for feet and Kohler engine. All good reasons to finish it up. I now have this frame and one from my 1622 torn down, guess got to get to stripper. Would like to get them done before winter so I can work on re-assembling as fall and winter come. I can blast the smaller stuff in my box. Warm enough to paint is the other issue then. NOW, gotta get vacumn out to clean up the rusty and clumps of junk off the lift, what a mess!! Betting will be like a puzzle trying to get all back together too. I have parts diagrams, but sometimes they are vague on exact placements, ha!

Think I have pix on here from long while back. NOW, just a pile of parts, not going to show those. Frame and the other off my 1641 going to stripper today. I'll be posting as I go along.

Got this frame and my 1641 back from stripper, REAL clean! Had to paint on primer to keep rust from forming. Gonna be just black on these, same as they were when new. Now can begin the small blast and paint parts to go on to frame. Getting the one rear-end de-rusted for the 1040 will be a job, the other one is pretty good and painted black with most paint still on it. Would like to get both of them on wheels pretty soon. Pix now. Both frames about the same. 1641 is longer and tank and batt mounts diff. Both used same axle but diff engines.

99, I bought yours more for engine and wheels. Still have it, but all apart, might work on it someday. This is diff one. Your engine going into it. Today dug out your front axle to blast and paint. Other one was bent and twisted. Yours had extra metal too, to beef it up. Today also used your brake band set-up, mine was toast and broke in two, lining fell out.

OK, more done, time for a picture. Also note it is on my Motorcycle lift from HF. I've had for two or more years, never used it to work on. This is first time. Not so sure I like it, too far away from the tractor at times and still a reach. Don't tell me the tires are on backwards, I saw that and just threw them on to hold it up anyway. Have to wait their turn for re-furbish. Next part will be cleaning up the K engine and dropping it on there, oh, and yes some front wheels before that. I have some narrow wheels and 3 ribs to try on that end. Hope they fit!

Have to apolagize (sic) on the wrong model used in my postings. Had a Duh moment, that lasted all week. It is a 1240, different that a 1040 which came out later and is much diff.

Today tinkered some more and painted the foot boards, one fender and the center tin cover for the frame. Hooked up a few things on brake and clutch linkages. Got out my narrow wheels and straightened some bad rim edges and blasted and painted those up. They are Safety Orange!  I used that same color on another Speedex I built and now sold and looked good. Better than the Yellow used many times. These wheels were white, which is OK, I just wanted to try something to set it off.  Now to get those 4" wide Tri-ribs on them. I'ld like to take to tire store, but last time I did that, he didn't want to mount my "new" tires I bought elsewhere. These are new Deestones, but I got them at swap meet last year. Maybe I'll try to wrestle them on. Need big bolt or something to put in a vice or ??? to hold it. Little stuff is harder to do than bigger. Least should be tubeless, if a tube, then for sure to tire store. Hey, maybe if I bought tubes would do them then, hmmm?

Also worked more on front axle and mounting the rear one on the 1641 that is shown on floor in pix here. Painted some pieces to put on it later.

Update: Found the mower clutch parts today mixed in with mounts I got with unmounted mower. Glad to find. Think I have them mounted right, now pull handle does work. Took some pix, but hard to see much. Have the tin baffle, gas tank, muffler all mounted and throttle cable. Need to get choke cable, then start some wiring. Fixed rear batt mount, need one long cable to front yet.I'm putting selinoid system in, not with batt wires running thru switch like Speedex liked to do. Won't need much for a harness.

More done, covers & fenders on, wired it up and fired right off, nice and quiet. Belt and clutch work. Now to Big hood and rear wheels. Gonna be awhile on those.
