I'm pretty sure my JD 318 has Hy-Guard because it is brownish, and definitely not red type F like I had in my old JD 140.  But I'm thinking about changing to Type F. I checked around on this forum and almost everyone says to "Purge" all the old tranny fluid before putting in the different fluid.

I'm probably showing my ignorance, but just how do you purge the fluid. Other than taking off the filter to drain it well, I'm not sure just what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

I switched a 320 over a while back and all I did is drain the tranny until nothing was coming out and the filter was off.  Poured some ATF though it and then put the filter on and filled it up.  Haven't had a problem with it and I think it has been like 2 years.
