what's the consensus? Has anyone actually downloaded it? How does it work? What are the pluses? Minuses? Can I live without it?

Been running a test copy as part of the MS Insider program for about two months. Big improvement over 8/8.1 but I still like the simplicity of 7.  I would not upgrade a "worker" machine yet.  I would also do a SSD upgrade and clean install if at all possible if installing on an older machine.

From what I have been reading about it so far you had better read the EULA (License agreement).  It seems that once you install Win 10 your computer and everything on it is free game for M$ to use and sell to third parties.  I would suggest doing some research before upgrading to make sure what you are getting into.  I would also suggest not upgrading for 6 month or until service pack one comes out.  Let them work out the bugs.

Edit: Here are a few articles you may find interesting if you plan to upgrade.

Yeah, and they will upgrade to 10.0 for free (for a year) then they want you to buy it. If you don't, they say you can roll back to your previous version. They're wanting to get rid of all of the older versions by giving an initial free upgrade and then charge you for it like you would be paying annually for anti-virus software.

Installed it on my computer. It's a Huge improvement from Win 8.1.

If you Must have the old style start menu (Like Me) use Classic Shell it's free and works very good. Here's the latest Release for Win 10 Start menu.http://www.mediafire...Setup_4_2_3.exe

If you don't want to wait for you upgrade to be sent to you.You can download Win 10 from Microsoft. Here http://www.microsoft...in10_Body_AddPC I suggest that you Download the ISO image, burn it to a DVD and Upgrade from that.Once you Upgrade it will generate a Key.Once you Upgrade it saves the CD KEY on Microsofts server and you can do a Clean install any time after that without having to input the CD KEY.

I have mine setup to look Almost like Win 7.My old 127 makes a nice wallpaper :rocker2:  wish I knew how to remove the date stamp though :wallbanging:

Very much so.  Even the wife is now realizing that moving over to Linux when Win 7 support ends is inevitable.

Forced the Mac switch on the wife in 2009.  She is a much happier camper.  Definitely will teach the little one Linux.  :smilewink:

I had been running windows XP Pro for several years, ever sense it came out. My tech man does not want to do any work on XP any more so used the old system for my weather station only and went with a complete rebuilt machine with windows 7 Home. Personally, I think Windows 7 sucks big time. The "Live Mail" that comes with it is not any better. It was like learning a new computer all over again. The office suite that also came with 7 is a bunch of crap. Have many documents saved from the old system and now cannot access them as they were not wrote with the new 7 version. I have looked at other email programs like thunderbird, etc. and they are just as bad as what I have. I am not ready to try and learn a new operating system and the Mrs. definitely is not. Why can't anyone leave well enough alone? If it ain't broke, don't fix it !! As for Windows 10, I would not even consider going close to it.

You computer nerds will disagree with me completely and that is fine. I have better things to do with my time than sit in front of a computer for 4 to 6 hours a day trying to figure out how to get an old document or add a new contact to my email book.

I have been hesitant to try it and after reading this I'm not going to, I actually like Windows 8.1 anyway.

Do you think W7 will last me 'til I go to the nursing home? Will I wake up one morning and GTT won't be there any more?

Here is your answer.  There is not new features that will be added to 7 but security patches will be support to January 2020.  So given your age you will have gone in one door of the nursing home and out the other by the time Win 7 dies. :poke:
