They usually do if everything is in working order
The poor excuse of a rusted out and corroded carb I put on there finally gave up on life , swapped it out for the Freshly rebuilt one that came off this engine and she fired right up (Didnt want to get the rebuild one dirty as I planned on restoring the tractor)
Found out i'm missing a bracket for the PTO cable so just bolted a piece of sheet metal on top to try the deck. Its very quiet sounding and very smooth running

Nice job on getting it running. Were there any guards over the belts originally or was this made before the "I will sue you" world evolved and common sense became very uncommon?

Way to go Brian. Glad you got it up and running. Looks real cumbersome sitting out front of that small tractor. One little branch in the wrong place and watch the belts go flying ! !

There is a guard that covers the tractor drive belts but no guards for the deck belts.
Definitely was made at a time when people knew that putting your hand in there would cause trouble

I have mowed a few times with these units It's kind of tricking with it sticking out so far like that. I don't think your missing anything the cable attaches to that bent flat piece then back to the engagement lever mechanism Your aloe right never intended to be lifted by a cable that's what the handle is for you lift the deck up and engage that into the snap hitch ears on the front of the tractor
Thanks ! I was wondering what the heck that handle and spring was for when installing it!!
