A friend dropped off a older Craftsman Hedge Trimmer Model 358 795781

he said it wouldnt start, i put gas in it a it tried to start on the first pull,

( funny how gas works ) anyway, on the 3rd pull the pull cord wouldnt go back in.

i have never messed with one of these things so i thought i would

come here and ask.

What is the best way to get the cord back in?

The recoil could be dried out, gummed up, or dirty and causing enough drag to overpower the return spring.

The return spring could have broken.

Take the recoil off and you should be able to see whats going on.  Probably an easy fix.

There are several video's on how to fix recoil starters on YouTube.

P.S.  If the spring has broken the end off [common problem] you can grind a new notch and it'll work again.  I've done many that way over the years.
