The tractor has never been apart.
I've not seen any pictures of any other Yard Man 990's on the web.

Being you are in Maine, I think you may have a rare re-badged Canadian Columbia. Just like MTD stuck different brands on their machines, Columbia may have done the same. I see stickers on the lower dash. If you can read the model number, it may have a number like 991-4 or 991-?.

Look on the inside of your grille, Columia's have the word Columbia cast in them.

As I understand it, Columbia was just MTD's name for its tractors sold in Canada.
Not a separate company.
This tractor came from southern New Hampshire.
Yard Man was Montgomery Wards house brand for garden tractors.
MTD made tractors for them to be sold as Yard Man.
In 1975, MTD bought the brand name and marketed "Yard Man" tractors though other outlets.
There was a Montgomery Wards store in Nashua.
It may have been bought new there.
I have some more photos but can't upload them just now.
Casting does say "Columbia" on it.
Dash decals are pretty much unreadable.
I will have to take the tunnel cover and dash tower off to get a better view.

I was thinking Columbia may have rebranded theirs for Yard Man in Canada and yours escaped to Maine.
Just thinking out loud..........
