Got to talk with a sales rep the other day and one of the things he demonstrated was the difference between Gates belts (Commonly sold through Napa and other auto stores) and select Lawn and garden belts which myself and other dealers offer.

The one on the left is the power rated kevlar belt we stock and sell and the one on the right is the so called power rated Gates green line belt which is the best they offer

We got to cut different brands with some snips and the gates cut apart easily with minimal effort, the Kevlar belt almost required two hands to get it cut and you can see the kevlar OEM belts have alot more cords in them than the Gates.

Found this very interesting and thought I'd share

Generally I'd say about $5+- for the Good kevlar or OEM spec belts

The guy wasn't from gates,

I was glad I got to get this info first hand from a guy who knows his belts as I can now confirm my suspicions that gates sell crap and will continue to tell people Gates for lawn and garden applications are not a good idea and most are only good for automotive applications hence why they are sold at places like Napa ect. The auto belts do not require shock loads so they are made cheaper.

I found the OE belt on my Gravely 40" two blade mower would last about six years. The green Gates would last about six weeks. I thought the first failure was a fluke, but when the second Gates failed, I
ordered a new belt from Gravely. End of problem. I do not remember the price difference, but it takes an hour to change the belt which makes the cost difference in the belt no factor.

On a straight run ,Gates is one of the best there is, but anything that gets bent backwards, ( like mower decks or hydro, drives ) the kevlar  power rated works the best for us.
