That is going to depend alot on what you do yourself and what you have done and what you need. I can rebuild a Kohler 12hp for $150 if the crank is still good and I use aftermarket parts. The big factor is that I've collected the tools over the last 45 years and can do everything but crank grinding myself. If you have problems with major parts, the price shoots up. I've been told that some people in my area have spent $1000 to $1200 having a single cylinder castiron engine rebuilt.

You should take the engines out and apart. The longer they rap, the more damage done. In some cases, just an overhaul(just bringing into spec) is enough. Take them out, apart, and show us what you have. Good Luck, Rick

Machine work can vary quite a bit; crank grinding, boring, and a valve job.

Depending on how much you do yourself that can vary the price.

To do a full blown rebuild and have it re bored and fitted with a new/turned crank its not unusual to spend around 1,000 to 1,500 on a proper overhaul.

Well worth it in my opinion as thats about what they sold new if you calculate for inflation.

The engines of today you can buy for $400 dont even come close to the quality of the older ones

I did two Briggs 18hp Opposed, both bored 0.002 over, new pistons, rings, gaskets, valves, etc Most parts from Sears parts. I think each ran around $350 +/-. I did all the work except for the boring.
