OK guys....I've got the trans all apart. 2nd gear was always jumping out of gear and shifter rod became extremely sloppy all the sudden. Anyone replace any gears in these old machines? Is it worth it? Do other rear ends fit? Just wondering if its worth the time. Any advise? Seems like most the gears have tapered edges. Couple are reversible but most aren't.

How are the shifter DETENTS?

They hold the trans in gear, if there not stiff or firmly holding the shifter in position then most likely that's the problem or the cause of the problem.

Can you post some pictures of the gears?
