H-16 Reliable?

I have a chance to pick up an H-16. I am new to Bolens and I have never had anything with a Wisconsin engine..... Tips, suggestions before purchasing, does, and don'ts?

The H16 should have a Tecumseh HH160 engine in it. Tecumseh parts are still available for this series but not as easily found like the Briggs or Wisconsin parts, especially the electrical components .

 

Besides that they are well built tanks!

Nope the Eaton Hydrostatics are nearly bullet proof if taken care of

What is the difference between the "G" line and the "H" line? I have a lead on a G14. I do realize the that it is 14 vs. 16hp. But they look somewhat similar

G14 Is gear drive with a 14HP Tecumseh HH140

The H16 was the end of the tube frames and considered by many the finest. It has a hydro transmission and hydraulic lift which make work faster. It is heavy and heavy duty. There are plenty of attachments out there. Check the Manuals Section for the Operators Manual and the Table of Attachments. Good Luck, Rick

After speaking with the owner, he said that the snow blower seem to be making a "gear winding" sound. He thinks maybe the 90 degree gear box on the blower? < Also said that the hydro pedal seems to be out of adjustment. He said it gets "uncomfortable" after a while> I am guessing he meant that the foot position, based on where the pedal resides, in retrospect to a steady speed? How difficult is it to adjust the hydro pedal?

Hello, something's to consider, tractor is or getting close to 40yrs old ! Expect breakdowns, could be anything ,major to minor know this going in. Yes there is adjustment on the travel pedal, check with our site sponsors for rebuild kits on blower gearbox, pretty sure Brian ( Bolens parts and supplies ) has them . Ergonomic's wasn't in vogue 40 years ago , creature comforts were a padded seat and a spring under it ! That's it , if your terrain is rough slow down or get a kidney belt. These things as stated are heavy duty and built to work. I have two, used one eclusively for snow removal for several years, blower or blade ,you will be impressed what they will push. IMO Tecumseh engines are quirky in their behavior sometimes can get out of 'tune' from just setting, as stated magnetos and regulator/rectifiers NLA .NOS and used ones reflect this price wise!

Forty years of wear and tear, expect loose steering components, maybe worn PTO bearings , drive belts, idler pulleys , etc. again our site sponsors that specialize in Bolens have a lot of NOS parts.

All in all IMO an H16 was a realiable , well built unit , gas tank over the starter is a safety issue IMO , other than that no real concerns other than age of unit and you don't expect it to act like its new.
