How to fix a bad exhaust outlet

I need some pointers on how best to get an exhaust on this K181, off a Speedex S18.

With some O/A heat and lots of luck you might get the old studs out. With all the pitting I don't know if it will ever be leakproof.

I would clean up those pipe threads in the exhaust hole and thread a pipe in there.

Those pipe threads are not usable. They are gone most of the way around.

I would clean up those pipe threads in the exhaust hole and thread a pipe in there. 

 

Yep, me too.  To do it right, you'll need a NPT  pipe tap of the appropriate size.   Make sure engine is turned until the exhaust valve is closed, as you'll wanna blow out the crud from tapping several times during the process.  Tap it slow, backing it out often to blow crud blow out.  It may look like the threads are gone, but they are filled with rust & crud.  The tap can make them usable again.

Oh, another thing.  The pipe tap may have to go in a good ways, and IF the pipe you put in wants to bottom before it snugs at the edge of the hole, then you'll need to cut off a couple threads at a time off the end of the new pipe until it goes in good & snug.  If you don't have all threads contacting good, then the pipe can & likely will work itself loose.

Ive used a shop vac instead of compressed air to clean the "crud" from the threads.  I still keep the exhaust valve closed,

but using the shop vac keeps the crud  out of my face/eyes.

Vacuum works good...Some grease on the tap will also help keep the bits of metal out of the exhaust port.

 

Slow & steady with the tap...back & forth.

If going with the tap repair , would it be wise to try getting as much rust out of the threads before running the tap in ? The metal around the exhaust looks so thin

That would be a good idea, as that would also aid in getting the tap started straight.
