I rebuilt the top end of the GT-20 this winter.  The jugs were measured and honed, in perfect condition.  The heads looked in great condition.  New gaskets installed.  During the installation I noticed that with the jugs and cylinders installed it rotated nicely with the flywheel.  After adding the heads there seemed to be quiet knock and now running the engine it is there.  Would this be a bearing issue on the crank or something else?  I was hoping not to split the case...

Sounds like it  started when it could make compression again. Or  bumping against the head.

Myself, I'd tear it back down, and check all clearances, and re-inspect everything. A gasket kit is way cheaper than a rotating Assy, and possibly more if it decides to grenade.

I would be afraid to chance running with a knock.  I had a blown Magnum 20 given to me, and I found the (too small) oil pump screen was clogged up with crud & excess silicone.  So it tossed it's rod from low to no lube.

Right hand cylinder on those engines are noted for throwing the rod. I'd tear it back down while you still have something to work with.

I thought that was somewhat resolved when they went from the Series 1 to the Series 2 KT's and the added oil filter when they went from KT to Magnum  resolved that issue for good?  I have a KT19 Ser 2 on my Ariens, I have to pull it and do some work onto it,
(not a rebuild at this time)  but I was thinking of looking for an 18 or 20 Magnum as a backup....

My wifes cousins are big Sunstar (Ultima) fans. They have quite a few and one of them was telling me about the rod problems when visiting about the one I just purchased. Supposedly this one has a knock in the engine and that's when he told me this. I guess I'll find out like TDNeura.

Be sure to inspect every part well through the teardown, as they are ALL clues to the original failure/cause!!!

On this engine I now have it running and can hear no unusual internal noises. Go figure.
