LF Parking Pawl Leak DIY

The first step is to drain the hydraulic fluid. I drained most of mine. Not a bad time to replace the fluid and filter after finishing this project. Next take a good look at that parking pawl nut.

Next disconnect the rod by removing the two cotter pins and then set aside. Then your gonna want to clean that whole area up.

This is what she looks like removed. Pull it apart and then take the two o-rings off and replace the with two #111 o-rings. I got mine from ace hardware. I tried the ones fro HF but they were to small. I used 7/16x5/8 o-rings. Make sure to lube the rings when you put them on.

Put the parking pawl back into the nut and put everything back together. Torque the nut to 20-40 foot lbs. Do not forget to replace the hydro fluid. I also took this time to clean my hydro fins.

I replaced the seal in my FEL hydro pump... Nice feeling to not have to put a catch pan under it, isn't it? :D

Nice thread and good info on the oring size for this. I thought that they needed square cross orings good to know that the #111 orings will work.

Okay just some info for you that may be helpful ,it may or may not make a difference. First the "nut" at its base is tapered, there is supposed to be a thin metal race or washer that goes on it to take up the taper and I believe prevent over tightening and galling of the threads. Second an o-ring is a o-ring is a .... not. These are ribbed outer or concave center o-rings originally,I agree with Ed (Husky) a square cross would be close to original ,tried to show this info in the following pics, maybe Todd (Classic Bolens) can shed some light on the subject, if he doesn't catch it here, perhaps a PM.

thanks for the info, one of the washers called for a quad ring that I have been unable to locate. I have found a few other people who have used the same orings without any issues. I did though take the washer that you mentioned off and cleaned it and re-install it. Its the washer in your second picture.

Typically when the parking pawl is engaged, the hydro fluid will soak the inner o-ring providing needed lubrication to the parking pawl and bushing. The quad ring essentially act as a back up ring or a piston to push the fluid back into the hydro unit and stopping any leakage. The idea is it allows for dynamic sealing, with limited friction. The #111 o-ring is a very close match to the original 1720312 o-ring, but I believe it is a little thicker diameter than the OEM. You may get lucky using only the o-rings. Many times the second o-ring is too tight and will pull off of the parking pawl over time and leak again. If your pawl and bushing have enough wear, it may not pose an issue. If you replace the pawl with a new one, typically using both o-rings makes the unit too tight to operate properly.

I have the 1719870 quad rings in stock if needed, as well as the new parking pawl, o-ring and seal washers.

Or just put two o'rings on it. Done it on all the parking paws of the rear ends that I have reseal never had a problem.
