Just picked up another 990.

has been repainted and very poorly at that.

Anyhow the original color was a metallic blue with white hood and fenders.

Who would have had this color.

Was told by another collector this was JcPenny color. But all JCP 990's Iv'e seen

are yellow with black block striping on the fenders

tractor is a 72 and is a 15 horse sorry no pics of it yet almost ashamed to post any

she's very ruff

color is the same as my 72 960 1500  in attached pic

Any thoughts

That's the first 990 I've seen with the fenders that bend downwards at the back. I know there was a list of all the house brands that were made by MTD. I can't remember if it had model no. references or not. That could tell you what the original house brand name would have been. Have a look in the manuals section and see if that list is there.

It may be originally an MTD branded machine.

It is a 960. A 990 would have 15" rims with 27"rear tires.
Oh and all 960's/990's/995's are MTD machines.

Yep, I just meant that it is possible it actually was sold labeled MTD, as opposed to Unico, Cenex, Wizard, etc.

So you are saying MTD did sell their own line.

That would make more sense then.

So do I have rare birds as they say

Having both the 960

and 990 in blue/white and 1972 year.

Still learning about these 990"s

Yeah the metallic blue and white was the MTD branded color combo for at least '71 and '72.  If you click on the brochure page CAT posted, you can see the MTD logo between the headlights.

I wouldn't call the MTD version rare but it's neat that you have the pair from '72.  Now you need to be on the lookout for an 860 or 760 from that year...

Jim

Funny you should mention that

about a month ago there was an 800 series on CL for $150

original untouched show room condition.

No phone with the ad 1 week of emails and no reply.

1 week later same tractor back up and asking $500

Those would be awesome side by side restored. Don't feel bad about the condition. Have you seen mine in my avatar....total rust bucket.

Its not the rust so much as what growing on it in places

I'm guessing it sat under pine trees a few years a lot of pine needles on it.

Only thing good going for it is it did run and move on its own
