I haven't had my 318 long, so looking for some actual 318 symptoms, etc. I was using the tractor pretty hard, mowing  up and down some steep hills. I got something caught in one of the blades. So I shut off the PTO and then drove the tractor to a flat spot and turned it off. After I removed the piece from the blade, I tried to start the tractor and I had nothing. The PTO switch was off, turn the key, nothing. So I let it sit and cool for a while. I went back later and it started. I have a seat safety switch that turns off the PTO, but no others that I am aware. So from experience, anyone have an idea what could be heat related that kills everything?

On mine there's a switch on the forward/reverse lever so it won't start in  " gear " so to speak .

most times that's it.  I have moved that lever ever so slightly more than once and not noticed it.... and then it wont start.  I had a little trouble with the gas on/off/reserve valve lever once too.  don't forget to leave that one 'on'.   I think there is a 'low oil pressure' sensor on the motor too.

Well I had nothing, so it was electrical. I will check the lever if it happens again, but I don't think that was it. But at least something to check, thanks guys!

PetesPonies:

Not sure any of these relate to your problem, but here goes anyway.

I'm not and expert, but I've had my 318 for 3 1/2 years, and those safety switches get me all the time. There are at least four that I know of that will prevent starting:

- PTO switch on

- Forward/Reverse lever not in neutral

- Not sitting on the seat, or leaning far to one side

- Not pressing hard on the brake

I also get caught when leaning to the side to go under low branches and the PTO shuts off because of the seat safety switch. You have to turn it off and back on to get it to work.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your 318. I sure enjoy mine.

Harlan

There is a box on them under the dash that can cause problems.  Mom and dads had a electrical issue once and they had to replace the control box.  I can't remember off hand what the symptoms were anymore as it was 20 years ago it happened.
