I'm in need of a manual, operators preferred, but either will help, for Kohler KV161 engine of 1960s vintage. My engine is a 1962, but anything will help. I'm trying to learn oil fill level (plug seems to be very low on the engine to me), as well as info about air cleaner and muffer. Muffler on mine is wrong so planning gravely style koher muffer. Air cleaner looks too small to me on mine as well. Pics can follow tomorrow, I'm tired. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Now that is a rare engine.

You do want to make sure you have the oil level right.  If the 161 is any cousin of the later KV181, lubrication is the weak point.

I don't have any information on the KV161 in the computer here, but I will check my hardcopy manuals and see.

What is this engine on?  Being as rare as it is, the best bet may be to find the info in a tractor operator's manual.

It is on a Springfield. I have most the manuals, not much engine info in them. Some idiot painted part of the tag, so can't read 161, but all other info is intact, and I'm certain it is 161. I need an air cleaner setup, as the one on it is off of a Clinton lol. So lubrication is weak point? I know it hasn't run is probably 10 years, last guy to work on it was struggling with spark, but this guy was no mechanic, and screws up all he touches, so glad he had no spark lol.

If the air cleaner is what Don shows in the eBay listing, the updraft oil bath, I have one of those.  I do trade ins on Clinton air cleaners any day.  :smilewink:

What carburetor is that?  Walbro LMV?

Lubrication was a weak point on KV181's, so I am only assuming that would be the same on a KV161.

I will post pics in an hour. I have never seen this angled out carb before in my life, and the Springfield pics I have seen of this engine use an air filter like on the horizontal version of K161.
What do I need to do to make sure lubrication system in this engine is good? (does this have an oil pump or a splasher?)

Carb looks to be stamped "LMV" "1"
Exhaust will be removed before starting this thing.

Ok, so the 181 looks totally different than the 161 oil fill. Anyone care to elaborate?

The Carb and air cleaner are Clinton

Those carbs were quite popular on the VS series, Have the stock carb and air filter just like this on my little Bolens rider.

Ben probably knows all models that used this carb and filter :D :poke:
