So I mowed with my tractor for the first time today, and the deck makes a horrible racket when I disengage the PTO.

It sounds like the bearing is going bad in the deck, is this part of what is referred to as the spindle assembly?

Just pulled your parts list and this is the 30'' single blade deck correct?

It could be the bearing or something bent and rubbing against the deck.

The complete spindle assembly runs $ 52.26  Bearings by themselves run $ 8.65ea

Try pulling the belt off from the pulley and spin the blade, if you hear a growling noise its a bad bearing

Yes, it is the single blade 30" deck.

I will try what you suggested, thanks.

It definitely is the bearing, I can hear it when I turn the blade.

I also noticed a ridiculous amount of slack in the deck belt, it is a wonder it worked at all.

I didn't think about it before, but my dad and I were looking at my mower, we think the noise I am hearing is the brake for the mower blade.

We are going to pull the deck out from under it to sharpen the blade, and check things out.
