Bought this at Portland today. It's green and has odd items, wondered if it was army? Here's some pix. Note the odd oil fill cap, the points and plug wire not connected, thinking maybe a coil was on it? Two holes in upper shrould, maybe coil mount? The air cleaner is weird shaped aluminum thing. Did find one mount leg cut-off, not neat! The start/gen did run with battery on it, and junk blew out of the exhaust, but no real compression as it sets. Think wrong gas tank added. For $20, might be good parts machine, OR, maybe fix and run? Also big cap by cylinder under gas tank, Oil? or breather?  Note HP is only 7.9 and 2800 rpm, not 3600. Why? Could this be a gen engine as noted by someone here?

Grumpy after I seen that big oil fill the first thing I thought was military I did some snooping and found the army had a genset called pe-75af.there was a 1953 with the square tank but the air cleaner was different. They also said the rpm was 2750 on the engine and 1800 on the generator seems the engine was run that speed for longer life and to keep the noise down.It also did not show coil on it.There is also 2 youtube videos 1 is your model and 1 is WW2 with a Z briggs.

I think it's safe to assume yours is an military engine

That gas tank and crankcase breather were commonly used on the B&S model 23's.

Modifications could have been done by any owners over the past 60+ years.

Here is the Briggs in my '64 sears/DB 725, notice they have that same little tube thing mounted to the top by gas tank, that is hood hold down clamp. Same Gas tank also

Mine also has the offset air cleaner and the snout goes out the grill.

I think those bolts in theh flywheel tin is a modification

If the build date truly is 1954, then not sure what it went to, but a lot of similarities to my 725

Sorry, but photobucket just sets and runs and runs with no pictures for long time, not sure why?  I've never just let it run, but after two minutes, think it's time to go, ha!  SO, didn't see those. Can't just put directly on?
