Hi Jake- I put a K series  12 hp kolher in my HD 12 and it went very smoothly. Go back to one of my old post and I think you can  see results.

Looks like you have an excellent platform to go any direction with. These old thing were built to last and work. Have fun and keep us posted.

Why not use the original type engine? The HD12's are rare enough to justify finding the correct engine.

According to a manual copy that I have, the HD-12 could have either a Wisconsin S12D or a Tecumseh HH120. Your HD-12 appears to have the S12D Wisconsin. As Bolens 1000 said, parts are available.

I repowered my HD-12 with a twin cylinder diesel, but I didn't have any original engine.  If I had the original, I doubt I'd have done a repower, especially if it were a Wisconsin.  But if you decide to repower, you may want to do it in such a way it could easily be put back to original....just in case.

Congrats on the find! If you do repower I would suggest keeping the motor just in case you ever decided to sell it. The next owner may want to put it back original. George and Burl both have put Kohlers in theirs with good success. Please let me know your tracors serial number. This is one model I need more serial numbers on to get a better idea of how many were made.

I did a Kohler swap on mine and it was really easy, had it running and driveing in like a hour. If I had stayed with the kohler I would have tried to find a 16hp engine, they are harder to find but the hd12 is a large tractor and really could use it. I went with building it into a super gt with a Kubota because all the drive line was shot. Nice tractor though, if you do go with a restoration I'm sure you can find all the parts to put it back right. Send me a pm if you need anything, I got the s12d engine that used oil and a bunch of other little things that I no longer need

Well bolted in a Kohler K341 (16hp) it's a real strong Kohler and ran it around the yard to make sure the hydro and rear is in working order so far so good.
