My Kohler runs great but wants to run away if I push the throttle all the way open. The governor is adjusted to spec and anything else I try to adjust doesn't help. Any ideas?

You have to limit the throttle cable travel distance to limit the maximum rpm.

If you follow the Kohler service manual procedure for adjusting the governor the same way I do it will never work. It is probably me but here is what does work.

With the engine not running move the carb throttle shaft from the idle position to wide open throttle. While doing that take note of which way the governor shaft rotates and write that down. Clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Loosen the clamp on the governor lever.

Use an elastic or a third hand to hold the carb throttle shaft in the wide open position.

Now rotate the governor shaft in the direction you wrote down until it stops.

Hold it there and tighten the clamp.

This works for all governors on all the engines I've done.

The throttle cable and spring linked to the governor lever is what increases the rpm.

The governor tries to reduce the rpm.

The balance of these 2 forces is the rpm you end up with.

There is a chance the internal governor parts have failed and no amount of adjustment will fix that.

I hate governor adjusting.
