As you can see, the original steering wheel on the tractor is toast. The steering wheel is 15" in diameter and has a tapered hub with a 1/4" key way cut and made by Sheller. I found a couple of NOS Sheller steering wheels that are the same, but have a tapered and splined hub. It took me 2 hours to make the key way cut with a 3/16" flat file and file out the splines with a coarse rat tail file. I kept test fitting the steering wheel on the steering shaft until it fit like the original. Another hurdle jumped for the restoration.

Nice work. Patience pays off, but why not use a tapered ream on the splines? I'm just curious in case I ever need to do the same.

Thanks, but I only have about 50 old files laying around and no tapered reamer. I did consider buying one, but I would most likely never use it again. It does take a lot of patients restoring these old machines, breaking down every component, inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and locating parts is a chore. Then comes paint, reassembly, and more paint. It's a fun hobby except for the sand blasting part.

How did you find the extra wheels? I would think that an impossible task and how did you cut the keyway the file in the photo looks to big. Did you choose a spot between the splines to cut the keyway first ?

Hank, these steering wheels were used for cars, trucks, boats, old golf carts, etc., so they do turn up for sale at times. The seller just happened to come across some NOS ones and had them listed for sale, so I bought a couple. The other one is for my '56 Power King tractor which uses the same steering wheel. The key way cut is actually 3/16" and my file is 9/64" thick, I just measured them. I used the edge of the file to make the cut.I used the lines of the splines as a visual guide as I filed, but it was basically done free hand and was tedious.
Since this tractor was built using car parts, I've been learning a lot about 30's Chryslers, De Sotos, Dodges, Crosley cars, and 40's Jeeps. It's been time consuming figuring out exactly what vehicles these parts came from in order to find replacement parts. I had to buy a replacement steering column tube for a Willys MB that I will have to shorten and weld the throttle bracket to. I'm documenting the restoration here on the forum in case someone else needs the information to restore or repair their Gard'n Mast'r Jr. tractor. There really isn't much detailed info out there regarding these tractors, so this info I'm passing along should be useful.
