Newby here. Picking up a 44 inch 20 hp Onan powered Craftsman Indy 500 mower and looking for info on manuals etc.

Sight unseen except for photos. Has an electric deck lift.

Can repair almost anything mower related.

Any suggestions for bugs to look for? Not sure of age yet.

First steps: The model number is 917.254422.  Decals state it is a Indy 500 limited edition.  Net search reveals it was made in 1986.  IMO someone took good care of it, doesn't look like it has 30 years on it.  Has the number 20 decal on it.  Onan 20 hp horizontal shaft, electric lift, electric blade clutch.  What amazes me most is how quiet it is.  Better half was using it about 100 feet away and sounded about like the vibrator in my wall-hugger chair.

Any suggestions for finding the manuals for it would be appreciated.

Great Tractor!!  I have a 1988 Indy 500 model that WAS used at the speedway I bought from a race team, #71 on the Decals, I didnt use mine much over the years, but lately I have been useing it more, (200hours) Take care of the Onan, They run hot sometimes, and you really need to keep the cooling fins, under the tins clean so you dont have valve seat problems,When the engine gets super hot the seats lose their press fit and fall out,  Bad results,Onan prices on parts are crazy now,if you can find them... also make sure the oil filter area still has the little seal to tin work intact, i bet it dont. Alot of cooling air is lost due to that  little seal missing.    otherwise Onans are a great engine, last many years, many hours.

I think we found that manual for you. Sears would change the last digits to show changes have been made. I have a Craftsman III with electric lift that had a P220 Onan on it. Good luck with yours.
