Hi,

I have a 318 that has become a huge project, dead motor.  I just found a 316 on CL with a 16hp Vanguard in it.  For a few hundred more than a Briggs motor alone I could buy the machine and get a mowing deck that I need too.  I'm wonder how compatible these machines are?

I would consider taking the engine, mower deck and all the sheet metal off the 316 and installing it on the 318 Frame and hydro.

Who knows if my plan would work?

Matt

It depends on which 316 it is.Does it have a single hydraulic lever or two?

As asked above, is the 316 an Open frame just like the 318? If so, you can take everything off the 316 and install it on the 318  and that way you have the H2 or H3 and power steering of the 318. The 316 doesn't have turning brakes, Power steering or usually more then H1 hydraulics.

The 316 has one hydro lever, and my 318 has two.  Looks to me they both have the same Transmission, shaft drive?  Correct?  The 318 has bigger drum brakes??

Then the 316 started life as a Kohler-equipped model, not the Onan model nearly identical to the 318.

Edit: disregard, wrong info.

If it has 1 hydraulic lever it's the later 316. The stripped down version of the 318. The original 300/316 was K341 Kohler powered and had 2 levers. The 2 316s are easy to tell apart when viewed from the rear. The older model is closed frame in the back with a big fat Dana rear end. The newer one is the open style rear frame with a Peerless transaxle. If the 316 looks like the 318 from the rear then it's the newer one. Check JDParts.com for the parts diagrams on both models to compare part numbers.

The 316 Onan and the 330 have a unique steering setup unlike any of the other models.

Yes that's right. They are the only models from that series with manual steering. I've never seen a 316 but have seen a couple of 330s for sale. Mostly you see 332 and 318. Prices are still high for those around here.

I have a 1985 JD 316 later model. Am I odd? No power steering, one brake, and one H1 lever.
