MTD 800 needs new motor

has 18hp want 25hp

   I have a 800 series garden tractor which I have had since new. The B&S motor has been going south the last few years and I was looking to get another motor, hopefully with more hp.


  MTD 800 18hp B&S 46" cut, 12 speed Hi/Lo


   Model 422707


   Type 121401


   Code 9405105B


     Any ideas on where to get another motor that would fit my current tractor?

Welcome to GTT. The engine may just need an overhaul. We would need more info on the particular engine you have and pics will clarify. A new engine will have to match the electrical system of your tractor. Check out our Manuals Section for the manuals that you need. Good Luck, Rick

What in particular is wrong with your old engine?


The bad part about those old opposed engines is that it is hard to find a replacement v twin made now that will fit without chopping and slicing.    Briggs doesn't even suggest any replacements, and Kohler and Kawasaki don't even list an option.  That doesn't mean there isn't one, it just means that nothing made today is going to fit that footprint 100%. 


Almost all the parts you need are available for those old Briggs, and you will be hard pressed to find a better engine.

The motor is a vertical shaft twin and the lower main seal has been leaking/dripping on to the main belt.  The engine gets real low on power as it warms up to operating temp.


Guess I'll look for some parts.  I was hoping to put a larger hp motor in the frame that included a oil filter.
