I have a 1976 Gilson that I rescued from the scrapyard. It has an 11 HP B&S that runs great after the usual points filing and carb cleaning. However one of the two blades would not turn , even with some persuasion with a big hammer. I broke the spindle or quill or whatever you call it that has the bearings in it for the blade to rotate on. I have looked and can not find a replacement. I'm thinking about looking for someone good at fabricating and having one made. Anybody ever made one? Any tips? Thanks.

Sounds like you broke the spindle housing if it's made out of aluminum and not to badly broken you might be able to have it tig welded but don't get your hopes up to high if it's in several pieces and even if welded it might still be junk.A good machine shop could make one but it would cost a bundle for a one off piece.

If I had to make one it would take me days to turn down a hunk of aluminum into a spindle housing.

keep looking something might turn up.

Maybe find two matching spindles that would fit into your deck and just replace both....Just a thought

I had to replace one that was unbuilt able. TORO wanted over 200
I went to the local place, flipped thru the book until I found one that had the same measurements, but bolted on top instead of under... $60

Do either of these look like it?

I wouldn't doubt that one of our site sponsors can get them or maybe have them
