That would be pretty cool. Isn't there a 400 series John Deere that is diesel from the factory?

would be an easy swap if you used the same motor as a 430 or 455? Its all off the shelf parts then. You could probably buy a 430 for what it would cost to do a complete swap on a 420 in the end

Would require extensive work stretching the frame, hood & other stuff, and yes, likely buy a 430 ready to go cheaper. A 2 cylinder diesel would be way & beyond easier to fit.

The 430 has a longer nose to fit the Yanmar and the cooling system. The result is that front and mid-mount attachments aren't really interchangeable (you can always modify them though). I think with all the mod work involved with making Yanmar fit in a 420, you could likely step all the way up to a 455 for about the same price.

A two cylinder diesel would fit in a 420 though. That would be cool.

If you need a motor and aren't hung up on a diesel, I've heard good things about the Briggs and Stratton Vanguard as a retro-fit for the 420. Jim's Tractor Repair in Minnesota sells complete conversion kits for around $2,000.

They do, or at least did, make those to power the refrigeration units on reefer trailers and so on. Not sure of the horsies, but there's a talk of it in a thread somewhere in this section. I also recall walking by something at the Agribition in Regina a few years ago, but we were late for the bar, so I couldn't stop and look.

I think the newer ones are the same size, with the gas option being the Yamaha and the diesel being the Yanmar, but the 420/430 were quite different.

Some possibilities that I am aware of are engines manufactured by Hatz, Deutz, Lombardini, Kohler, and Onan. I'm sure that there are others that I am not mentioning here also.

Go ahead & buy several different models & do a test blowout for GTT members! LOL They look great, but I don't thin k I'd trust their parts availability as far as I can throw a pickup truck. That one 22hp can come with a 4 speed w/reverse tranny!
