I have 2 Ford LGT165s, one an older open side and a newer closed side. For a long time, either one or the other was running, but not both at the same time. Both are up now and I have been able to run them back to back. My closed side has been repowered (kohler v twin 18hp) and the open side has the original kohler 341.

I think the closed side is more "modern" (even with the original rubber mounted engine). But I kind of like the look of the open side - it's growing on me... I actually think my open side turns a little tighter than the closed side model. My closed side has been the worker for me, while the open side has not had to work much. Both are tough designs and I think either would be a great work machine.

So which do you prefer? And why? If you could have one or the other (in equal shape and condition) which would be your preferred machine?

Personally, I like the open sided versions. I've never been a fan of the closed in style tractors. I like to see the mechanicalness of it.

I've got 2 of the closed sided 165's and love them.... I'd say it's all what you dig. I sure wouldn't shy away from either tho.

I've got both.
I perfer the closed side.
It's quieter. And I really hate that gas cap on top of the fixed hood on the open side!

I like the open side (I have three) partly because that is what I found and partly because they look like smaller versions of my 1973 Ford 2000. The disadvantage of the open side is that the engine oil pan is welded to the frame and the engine is a different block than most Kohlers. Good Luck, Rick

True , they , the open side , do look more like the farm tractors, which I like. Noel

Open sides do have more of a classic look. I focus on the 1976 models with the bolt-in engine. Smoother in my opinion. I'd like to install an 18hp v-twin sometime and and decal it a LGT 185 for giggles and kicks!

I have a 165 closed side and a 145 open side that I mow with both have 50 inch decks the 145 has a bolt in oil pan both do a great job just put new ag tires on the 145 made a big difference between the two. Love the looks of the open sides ,have 5 of them.

I have both LGT 100 that is closed side & LGT 145 that is open side. The open side does look like the big tractors of those years & like that. The closed side has a tendency to look larger & the one thing I like about it is the ease of access to the complete motor with being able to open the hood & remove the sides with no tools. The thing with the closed side that I do not like is it being gear drive. After having a Hydrostatic Drive the convenience of having to shift when changing direction is nice. I may convert the closed side.
