Thanks acwd45!  I was reading through the manual someone posted and the idle speed does seem to be correct.  Just used to diesels idling sub-1000 RPM. :) 

 

When I grab the PTO shaft, it is a little sloppy.  Doesn't seen to be the u-joints though.  I'll bet your right and it is worn splines.  I'll have to pull the deck and look.  Want to inspect the gear box and change the belt anyway.

 

Speaking of belts, any thoughts on changing the water pump and alternator belt?  It looks like a real PITA with the drive shaft connected to the crank.

 

Here's an updated pic after I degreased the engine (should have taken a before, she was filthy).  :thumbs:

I changed my belt a few years ago when I had the radiator out to fix a leak. I don't quite remember but I think there was two bolts to unhook the driveshaft. Not much room in there to work.
