I traced the mtd brake pads back to a hayes 400m series pad. There is some one on ebay who has several sets of these if anybody needs a set. They are $22.00 per set plus $3.00 shipping. Not cheap but they do fit. Just threw this out for information purposes.

NAPA used to sell them as #7-6052. My catalog is 11 years old so I'm not sure if they still have them. Good Luck, Rick

Its good those worked for you. They are actually considered vintage pads that were used on some earlier snow mobiles & motorcycles. I guess that's why they are so pricey. Thanks for sharing I'll add that to my long list of 990 notes.

Mine are in good shape. I had an old Lil Indian Mini Bike back in the day & my Dad would make me pads from his old brake linings.

Do these pads just sit inside a holder or are they glued in place?

Anyone have the dimensions of the originals such as width, thickness?

The originals were 1.600 wide across the round side and .370 thick. These are sold as 1 5/8"  or 1.625 wide across the round side but they fit slightly looser than the originals. Perhaps he was using a Chinese caliper.

The originals were glued on the inside only to the transmission but it sometimes breaks loose. I made mine out of an auto disc brake pad by sawing the material off with a band saw and shaping with a sander. Wear a mask doing this. Thickness is not that critical because it is only a parking brake. I used epoxy to cement the inside pad in place. The metal backer plate is needed on the movable outside pad and is not cemented.
