Here is an earlier Colfax....more like the typical Bachtold mower. They are basically a walkbehind minus runninggear and engine.

I have a friend who has a 1050 with the same front mower. Identical. He said it was from Bolens?

The mystery is solved. The "Trisickle" front mount mower for the Tube Frames was made by the French and Lawrence Company.

This one looks like someone used the mounting hitch, gearbox assembly and some odds and ends from the Tubeframe reel mower attachment to build a finish mower.

I just bought the 1050 with the front mower. Pick it up next week. Will post pictures. The owner is an older gentlemen that has had bolens tractors for more years than I have lived and he believes it came with the 1050 from the dealer. Where the dealer got it I don't know. The dealer is long gone. It is identical to the pictures of the 2 above and fits ClassicBolens description of it. My thought was it had to be home made when I first saw it. However there seems to be more than a few of these around? It's not OSHA approved the blade on the one I'm getting sticks out from the top shield/cover by 1/4" or so. Think it will cut anything up to 1/4".

Sweet. Would love to see pictures when you get it. I've been searching for info on French & Lawrence for a few hours today. Sent out a few emails looking for leads. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more info on these.

The more I look at this, I really recommend you take a closer look at it if you can. I'm not completely certain that it's home made. The gearbox set up is very clean and straight forward. Very similar to the reel mower set up. Almost too good. It may be worth a closer inspection.

I received a little bit of info today regarding the French & Lawrence Implement Company.

"Hi Todd,
The French & Lawrence Implement company was a well known in the 1960s through about the 1980s or so.  The French part refers to a family from Golden Gate whose two daughters married two Lawrence brothers, Scott and Wasson.  The elder French was apparently an investor.  The two Lawrence brothers ran the business and  sold tractors, yard equipment, large appliances and such. Those two families are no longer in this area, in fact, I believe only one child (now in his 70s?) survives.  I do not know his contact information.  Local newspapers regularly carried ads for their business and both men were active in civic affairs.  Their father, W.S. Lawrence, ran an abstract company for fifty years or more.  I do not know anything in particular, however, about the Bolens connection itself. An extensive history of the Lawrences (who were very inventive men)  and their business would be a big job, but I can answer questions and help if you can pinpoint your interest.

Wayne County Historical Society"

I have a few more leads out that will hopefully produce more. I will continue fishing and will update with any further info I can gather. And I do believe that I will be actively pursuing one of these to restore.  :dancingbanana:

Very cool! I could put one of those bad boys to good use around here.
Looks to be slightly dangerous

Being dangerous is half the fun!
