All,

I have a fix on Johnson loader.  Does anyone know if it will run off the hydro on my 23 or do I need a separate pump?

Im guessing i need a pump but wanted to check with the experts.  also anyone know what it will set me back if i do need a pump or even if one can be obtained?

thanks

The only two setups I've seen use an external pump mounted directly on the front PTO or on the side of the loader frame driven with a belt by a special pulley mounted on the front driveshaft (behind the three belt sheave).
I'm told this is an acceptable replacement for the side mount Cessna pump although I haven't tried it.

It needs a separate pump..
My loader on my HT 23 uses a Northern tool pump.
Cost is about $150 to $200.

Concentric/Barnes High Pressure Hydraulic Gear Pump — 0.517 Cu. In., Model# G1232C5A300N00

What's the story with the repair you need to make? Did the loader/tractor not come with a pump? There was an excellent thread posted here or on MTF (can't remember) by a member who restored a Johnson loader that had to deal with replacing the side mount OEM pump and sheaves.

There are also folks who've posted photos of the factory front PTO mounted model.

For whatever it is worth, I found that the pulley from a 1985 Chevy s-10 4cyl  air/smog pump (not A/C) was an exact match for the damaged pulley on a pump mounted on a Cub with Johnson loader a couple years back. You will be amazed at what that loader can do. Good luck on the project.

The loaders I've installed all ran external pumps.

Thanks for all the feedback.  as usual, all great insights.  The loader does not come with a pump.  but all the cylinders, valve unit etc are there.  I will have to take a look at the other threads.

Its a solid FEL and they dont pop up all that often...So im guessing a pully off the front PTO to the pump then to the FEL should work ok.

The standard Johnson loader installation on a Large Frame used a pulley on the front engine stub shaft between the existing 3-groove pulley and the flywheel screen. Mine has 4" pulleys on both the stub shaft and the Cessna hydraulic pump mounted to the loader support frame, so the pump would be running at engine speed.

The front pulley will work fine. Just mount the pump so the rotation is right.
