Ok guys, this happened to me last summer, just wondering if you can figure out what it was that went wrong.
It took me way longer than it should have!

60HP Deere, sitting on my driveway at fast idle while I hooked up the mower.
All of a sudden I hear it starting to run rough, then the revvs start picking up. Clouds of white smoke out of the exhaust then it just stops as if it had seized.
My heart was sinking pretty badly, I was seeing a few grand going up in smoke in an engine rebuild.
Jumped up in cab, hit the starter switch, it spins over (a bit too) freely, so not seized but doesnt even try to start.

I towed it out the way (yea, towing a few tons of tractor up hill with a half mounted topper wasnt easy!) and the next night set to repairing it. Took me about an hour to find the problem.
Now fixed and appears to be fine.

Any thoughts?

Intake leak? I don't know what motor it is but assuming the intake gasket blocks oil and air.

Don't know what model JD You have? But since you fixed it in an hour I would rule out a headgasket. If it has a water cooled intake that could do it when that gasket blew.
Or I had a Ford Car that the modulator valve went out and it would suck transmittion fluid into the intake and blew a plume of white smoke?

I answered on the fact that he said he "FOUND" the problem on an hour, I thought that meant it took a hour to figure out, he didn't say how long it took to fix it. LOL

I'm going with water in fuel or fuel shutoff solenoid failure.

MH81 gets the prize! I found that some kind soul had dumped a load of water in my fuel tank!

I must admit, my first thought was head gasket and I was on my way to taking the head off when I took off the fuel lines and thought the diesel didnt smell like diesel!

Now you just need to find the "kind soul" who dumped the water in the tank and give him a proper "thanking"

Sorry, can't help you there... I did see someone peeing in your tank, but I didn't get his name.
