Yesterday I needed some room to work so I pulled out a couple of tractors.   I parked the little gilson behind the shop.  It was so cute I just had to take this picture.

That's cool. It does kinda look like the happiest tractor around.

I take it Simley was Smiley?   Kinda looks like a fat kid, not too tall, wanting to fit in with crowd, good personality! But, still just a Gilson! :poke:

As I get to know this tractor I can't help but think it is an odd duck.  The advertizing for it said

It's Gilson's new 8 hp tractor with low profile styling, single-control traction drive performance and heavyweight features you won't find now or for years to come in ordinary machines.

It seems the traction drive (aka friction disk as on a snow blower) turned out to be a problem.  Over time it needed adjustment and according to a service bulletin dealers were not doing it.   It could be that his and the complexity of the tractor was its downfall.

The friction drive on my Ariens RER RM1332 works flawlessly but then it is about 25 years newer.  It might be interesting to compare the two.

That must be like one I had long ago, when was in school yet?  Had a variable speed lever, and under seat was the metal disc and rubber tired wheel to run in and out on it. That was moving, but not driving it. Got it at rummage for cheap, couldn't fix at that time, sold it at One of My rummages then. Those drives are what I don't like on many of Gilsons and other RER brands since then.  I bet same model or similar. As you show stated it WAS a  heavy tractor and lots of levers/features.
