Hellos everybody, I've been lurking for a while now. I got a bolens 1050 about 2 weeks ago it runs decent. Came with a plow so I've been using it for that. However I'm having issues with it running. I've been having to jump start it almost every time. And after it runs for a while anywhere from 15-90 mins it shuts off. Most times before it starts again I have to tap on the starter solenoid with a wrench. I'm thinking I need to replace that but is that would could be causing it to shut off? the battery seems to be holding a charge.

Also I am looking for the shifter cover plate it anybody has one of those laying around.

Thanks
Shane

Welcome to GTT. Checkout the Manuals Section. I would make sure that the gas cap is vented. You may be creating a vacuum in the gas tank. Good Luck, Rick

sounds like to me you could use a new solenoid. but that wont fix the tractor from dieing. my guess would be the coil. ive had coils that worked when cool but once the tractor got warmed up good the coil would lose spark.

Welcome to the site.  I mentioned you was looking for a shifter cover plate?  do you mean the long plate that covers the transaxle forward under the back edge of the dash ?

Welcome to GTT!

Sounds like an electrical problem to me. Have you checked to see if you are losing spark when the machine shuts off? If you have an inline spark tester you can run the machine with it on and see if spark stops when the engine dies.

The solenoid will have nothing to do with the unit shutting off as it only acts as a starter switch when you turn the key.

With a dead battery every time it sounds like you have a problem somewhere in the electrical system, may want to download the manual and rewire the tractor back to factory specs.

no I need the bearing retainer plate located on the base of the shifter. if refering to a parts diagram I believe it is ref. no. 36 part number 1713455. (i'd have to check, thats just from memory)

i'll see if i can find an inline spark tester, i just printed off the wiring diagram this morning.  I'm planning on working on this over the next few days. i couldnt find how to test the starter generator to see if its charging the battery or not.

As stated, the solenoid will not cause the engine to shut off.

However, if you need to replace your solenoid, be sure to get the correct style, as there were 2 different solenoids used on Bolens tractors.
