Got a chance to play around with the 600 Today. I decided to mount the starter and voltage regulator and see if the starter was any good. I opened up the back cover and it looked clean inside and the brushes looked good. So I mounted it and pushed the start button and it started right up. I shut it off after a few seconds because I didnt have the battery tied down. When I went to crank it over again it cranked very slow and then stopped cranking all together. Then a little smoke came out from the starter :wallbanging:.

Looks like its going to need to rebuild

Doc,
You may want to check this out... it could help explain the smoke better.

It is british, but it's readable.

Since I'm planning on restoring the 600, I'll probably do a complete rebuild on the starter. New bushings/bearings ect.
Once the weather breaks and the grass needs cutting I'm going to cut the grass with her and make sure everything is working as it should so I know what has to be done when I restore it.

If I didn't know better, I'd think somebody hooked it up wrong!
