to the OP, RJ 12s seems a bit "hot" for these small engines, are  you compensating for burning oil?  most small engines that take the J series Champion take a "8" heat range not a 12.

I have had issues with the J19LM plugs in push mowers, total rubbish.  The old J8C and CJ8 plugs have always seemed to work well  In Onan and Kawasaki twins its always been NKG plugs and in the Briggs and Kohlers the RC12 or RC14yc series.  Is there even a USA made plug anymore, most we get in at our shop seem to be made overseas.   Guess thats why I went to compression ignition on my GT.  Along with not having the fuel turning sour after she sits for a month or so without use.   Mike

I've never cared for the J19LMs, especially the smooth ceramic one's. I don't know why Briggs switched to them in place of the J8/CJ8. They did the same with opposed twins and say to use a J19LM instead of a RJ12 that my engine manual says to use. I heard the J19LM has something to do with emissions?

Right from the B&S Opposed Twin owners manual

huh... I had an 18HP Briggs opposed twin that I transplanted onto a mower that I flipped, I do not remember what plugs it took.

I know that the later 90s twins took a J19LM in place of the RJ12
