You might want to check the gear shifter to make sure its aligned correctly. Seems if someone else had it apart previous there might be more of an issue. I guess like said it depends on the $$. Seems like those moto mowers are fairly easy to find way up north

I'm not going to ask about the $s, but it could be a good or bad deal.

Could be what's leftover after restoring another one -or- one defect from being perfect.

If you decide to go look, should have a cast-aluminum steering wheel, rear fenders and stamped-steel seat.  There are lots of good examples on the web.  Always worth-while if it's not too far.

Other issues to consider:

The battery cover and the belt guard (right-side) are often missing.

The connection between the hinge and the hood is a weak-spot.  Many have had to be beefed up.

Sometimes where the hood fastens at the steering column, the welds may break.

I've seen folks looking for the throttle and choke linkages.  They will break if you try to force rusty cables.

Does it have the original motor - an 8hp Kohler with a starter/generator.

Here's the part-numbers page for the transmission:

Thanks for page 2 of the parts manual. I am going to try and get a picture posted and hopefully answer some of the questions. I very much appreciate the items you highlighted to look and watch for.

A "restored" tractor wouldnt have a blown transaxle i would approach with caution. You best bet and only is finding a used one. They pop up on ebay once and awhile.

I appreciate your input and I am trying my best to sleuth everything out without physically seeing the tractor.

Okay, thanks for the tip regarding the gear shifter.

The owner can find this number stamped on the trans axle housing E2 1022186, however I am unable to find that number on the parts listing you provided. Any thoughts ?

Thx

Ken

I am pretty sure that transaxle hasnt changed since the 50's. Also that tractor looks nice in the photos. Hopefully you can get it cheap and find a transaxle for it

I'm not aware of any model or vintage differences, but I haven't had any of mine apart.  The more I find out about these GTs the more I find out that I don't know.  Could have been a mold number for the casting?

Looking at the pictures, that moto-mower looks great.  Put it in the 2nd category - 1 fault short of really nice.

Almost anything I'd look for appears to be there, and more.  Could be the original 8hp Kohler, correct steering wheel, levers and knobs appear to be original.  Belt guards on BOTH sides of the motor.

Missing battery cover in my opinion is minor (most are missing).

Thanks very much for the positive review of the tractor. It is a confidence booster as this is my first venture in this type of equipment. I think I am reasonably mechanically inclined, however the input I have received in total from the forum is invaluable.

Thanks to all who have responded.

I want to thank all of the members who helped me with my transaxle problem. I purchased the used transaxle that was posted on craigslist and actually drove down to pick it up.

Tractor is up and running and I have posted a few pics to show off my new toy. Very pleased and amazed at the power the tractor has.

Thanks very much

Ken from the great white north
