So I ran into a weird issue while plowing with my Qt17 today. It started leaking a lot of oil out of what looks to me to be some sort of pressure relief valve. It sticks out of the left side of the engine not far from the front pro? Any ideas on what this is and if I can simply plug it?

Check and see where exactly the leak is coming from to be sure there's not crack in the aluminum.

That is the oil pressure sending unit. You can just remove it and plug it off as it is not used on the QT17. Also as Brian said clean the area off and make sure that is where the leak is.

The oil could also be coming from the PCV system. They are known for puking oil out of the crankcase vent when hot. I rebuilt the crankcase breather on my KT17 but it will still do it when hot. It seems to build up pressure, then release a bunch of oil then be ok again for a while?

I agree with all the above.  clean the engine so you can see really good then fire it up and try to locate where it is coming from.  Quite often the issue is with the breather system, but it could be any one of the stated issues.
