We ran in to Jody (brownboystoys) at the Bainbridge winter meet and greet and swap a couple weeks ago. He had a sickle bar mower for a Bolens Ride-a-Matic and we struck a deal with him but didn't have a way to haul it home at that time. We went over to his place the following weekend which was actually last weekend and picked it up. He and his dad were nice enough to show us around and they have a lot of cool stuff.

I downloaded all the manuals I could on the sickle bar mower and the Ride-a-Matics to get an idea of what I needed to do to get it hooked up. The one thing that has always thrown me off on Dad's 59 was the PTO lever. It never seemed to work properly and I didn't know why. Well today I spend some time and pulled the whole assembly off along with the variable sheave pulley. I realized that there was a reason there was a circle clip on the end of the shaft that the PTO lever pivoted on. I managed to drive the pin through which was seized causing all of the issues. After cleaning up the pin and greasing it the PTO works just like it should.

Took a short video of the tractor running and engaging the sickle mower. The only thing I wish was that it could be stored vertically like the Haban sickle mowers for the tube frames. I also adjusted the runners so it was at the highest position.

Here is the video and of course I took it with my phone again and the sound sucks.

Sounds great George!

Never get tired of hearing one of these old K series fire up!

I think this is the first time I ever seen one of these sickles in action!

I like that the cutter is in front rather than to the side like my Habans. Good Luck, Rick

For straight open cutting the cutter in front is ok but, you cannot see all of the bar.  the center could get plugged and the operator would not know it for a time.  With the side bar you can see the entire bar all the time.  Also when your cutting along banks or pond areas it is sure nice to have that sickle out over the edge and not the tractor.  Just my opinion.

My iPod thing won't show videos, not sure why, but when I get to my computer I will see it. Not a computer whiz. Noel

George spotted the sickle mower at the swap meet the other weekend and just thought that I had to buy it. We knew Jody from previous shows so felt very comfortable striking a deal. George wants our goal this year to show tractors with attachments. This gives the Ride-A-Matic her attachment. George was determined to get the mower hooked up and running. I bought a few things several days ago that we needed to make the mower work. It was just some fresh cable and a new carriage bolt for the lift. Fortunately for me I have a determined son that works on a project until he gets it right. I've said before that I can take apart any machine and ask George to please put it back together.

That is so cool. I've been researching my front mount sickle mower for my RAM. Now you really have me wanting to get mine restored. That is a great video.

Is that a hospital hallway? Why so clean?

The video was shot in the middle bay of our garage. I shot the video with George's phone as he got the tractor running and the mower working. If you notice the entire video focused on the sickle mower. If I had pulled back and had gotten an entire shot of our garage you would have seen a little bit of a mess that needs to be addressed.
