I would think so, it's even colder, and more frozen lakes up there to skate around on---what else is there to do?---No-brainer! (JK)

No doubt we spawn a  lot of hockey players. Our city alone has over 60 outdoor skating rinks free to the public to use. There are plenty of shinny games day and night as well as recreational skating. As well skiing/snowboarding is part of the grade school curriculum so ya we do excel at  winter sports. e.g. the Staal brothers... among many others notable players in the pro ranks
